If your video production requires sound, a controlled, soundproof environment is crucial. A soundproof stage provides flexibility and can save you time and a ton of money. However, it is often an overlooked detail in the stage/studio selection especially since not all stages are soundproof. At Bravo Studios’ New York Green Screen, we make sure all of our stages are soundproof. Being soundproof is also particularly important because of the location — New York City is amazing but it can also be loud.
Here are a few best practice tips for when booking a soundproof stage or studio:
1. Ask if the studio is soundproof.
This sounds like common sense but it’s better to know then to show up on set and find out that the stage you rented wasn’t soundproof at all.
2. Know your shoot type and choose a studio that fits your size requirement.
In this instance, especially if action is involved, you will need to know how much space is needed for walking, running, jumping, etc. All of these actions will make sound and may need to be captured.
3. Hire a professional sound recordist.
So many things can go wrong with sound, having a professional on hand will minimize problems. And when in doubt, check the sound yourself by listening back to the recording with the sound recordist’s headphones.
4. Think of the details.
Are the crew chairs solid and silent? What about jewelry or shoes on set that make noise. Minimize interruptions in the audio and sound by thinking of these details.
