Many video and photo productions require a talent or many talents. They are the focus and the subject of the media piece. But are you overwhelmed with the idea of casting for those specific characters you have in mind? Well, Bravo has a few tips for you to keep in mind while you’re casting for your production. Take a deep breath and read on!
Hire A Casting Director
If your budget allots for a casting director, then we absolutely suggest it. Casting directors specialize in seeking the best possible fit for all the characters in your production. They cast a wide net, too. Many casting directors have relationships with big name talents, which is a huge added benefit if you are seeking for a large name talent.
Consider Casting Against Type
You may have an idea of “who” and “what” you want for the cast, but you’ll benefit from having an open mind. You may see or find something you haven’t thought of before. It could even make your project more unique and modern than the competitor.
Know “Where” to Post
There are many casting services out there. Once you’ve reached out to some reps that you know, consider posting it! Several general casting calls platforms include Actors Access, Backstage, Breakdown Services, Casting Networks, etc.
Self-Tapes or In-Person Auditions
In this new digital age, self-tapes have became a norm. After looking through submissions, consider receiving self-tapes before having an in-person audition. Or just jump right into an in-person audition! IT depends on how quickly your turn around rate is.
In-Person Auditions
Consider having a professional space for your auditions. Where the audition takes place will speak volumes on your production quality and value. It’s the first impression, overall! Empty theaters, group workspaces, an office, or even stages (like Bravo Studios’ New York Green Screen) make a great audition space.
Stay Organized
If there is a script or character breakdown available, send it out to the potential talents. The more information they receive on the characters you are casting for, the better it is for them to prepare. At the audition, have a sign-in sheet prepared as well as a camera to record the auditions. Consider having a reader in the room so the directors and producers may focus on the performance. Have extra scripts printed as well!
Need a Chemistry Read?
You’ve found a few people you like? Great! But do they need to perform in duos or groups? Maybe they’re a couple, mom and son, or siblings for example. When you auditioned the talents, perhaps, you auditioned them separately. Now is a good time to bring a few people in and pair them for a “chemistry test”. All this means is that people audition together in their respective roles to see if there is a strong and realistic chemistry.
